LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!
Every bride wants her wedding to be memorable. One of the first steps to take when you begin planning your wedding is choosing your venue, and everyone scrambles for the same hotels. However, couples are now getting more creative than ever before while planning their weddings. With creativity comes a new desire to marry in non-traditional wedding venues that encourage couples to incorporate hobbies, passions, and a desire to plan a completely unique and unforgettable experience for guests. So why not explore different options for your big day, that would allow you to infuse your own special personality and preferences into the location?
Here are a few unusual venue ideas that you could consider, for a wedding with a difference. Mind you, most of these would require that you keep things small and intimate, so they may not always work for the typically large Sri Lankan festivities –
Library
Are you and your spouse-to-be avid readers? Is literature an influence on your romantic ideals? Being surrounded by books makes the perfect backdrop for a sophisticated soiree, as library spaces are usually historic and sprawling. If you love your classics, you’ll totally fall for the idea of marrying amid some of the world’s best love stories. Take inspiration from your favorite novels to plan your party décor.
Forests/woods
There’s something enchanting about saying your vows in the great outdoors, sealing your bond surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the natural world. There’s no better place to celebrate nuptials for couples who love to hike and trek, than under a canopy of trees. Why not turn your wedding into a group camping experience? Do make sure to keep things eco-responsible, though!
Underground caves
Stalactites can create a hauntingly beautiful cathedral-like backdrop to the adventurous bride who wants to do things different. Certain caves in Sri Lanka have been used for classical music performances and theatrical productions… so why not a wedding?
Theatre/opera house
Add a little bit of drama to your big day. If you’re into the performing arts, consider saying your vows on a stage. Love the theater but want to get married outside? Consider an amphitheatre.
Converted Building
Wedding venues are now popping up all across the country in converted buildings, such as former warehouses, factories and even farms, which can be rented out for parties. These unconventional spaces are like blank canvases that can be transformed to fit almost any theme or aesthetic.
Public Park
Parks provide some of the prettiest backdrops for your wedding photos. And while they’re the perfect spot for an intimate, casual wedding, pulling off an affair on a grander scale can also be done. Many public spaces require you to apply for a permit ahead of time and will have some restrictions as far as bringing in rentals, sound, equipment, food and drinks.
Botanical Garden
If you’ve always imagined getting married surrounded by flowers, consider having your wedding at a local botanical garden or horticulture center. Besides lots of beautiful blooms, of course, many gardens have pretty fountains, tree-lined paths and perfectly manicured flower beds where you can have both the ceremony and reception, without the need for décor.
Boat
Love the sea? Charmed by lakes? Why not wed on a sailboat, yacht or ferry! Your guests will love it, unless they’re the seasick sort. Remember, marrying on the water doesn’t necessarily mean on the high seas.
Theme Park
The ultimate date for a couple that’s young at heart. Can’t get enough of roller coasters, carousels and candyfloss? Amusement parks are a fun option for an extended wedding weekend, where guests can enjoy the park’s amenities over the course of a few days (just make sure you block hotel rooms closeby). You could also transform an outdoor venue into a carnival, as long as you obtain the proper permits.
Under Water
A fitting representation of how deep your love goes. Some overseas aquariums offer underwater ceremonies for water-loving, diving-obsessed couples. You won’t just be surrounded by fish tanks—you’ll be in one! Exchanging vows amidst colourful fish and coral could be the ultimate experience for diving enthusiasts.
Ancient Ruins
Give yourselves the royal treatment and choose historical palace ruins for your wedding. The rock, pillars and timeless atmosphere will create a stunning ambience for a theme inspired by the past.
Hot Air Balloon
Take your love to new heights. Couples can now get hitched while they’re soaring toward the clouds. Some balloon baskets hold up to 12 passengers, so the bride, the groom, and the rest of a small wedding party can fly together for the ceremony.
Planetarium
The universe creates a wonderful ambiance for your ceremony. At a planetarium, the space requires very minimal décor thanks to the awe-inspiring backdrop of stars overhead. If you and your partner are obsessed with starry skies, take your common love for astronomy as an inspiration for your special day.
Waterfall
If you’re a nature buff, have you thought of tying the knot in front of a waterfall? You will likely have to go on a short hike to your destination. However, the photos captured would be well worth it! A waterfall wedding is the stuff of fantasies, and when you’re blessed to live on a tropical island like Sri Lanka, why not explore the option?
Movie Theater
Yours is a love story worth watching. Consider reciting your vows and celebrating with your guests at a movie theater! Why not project your backdrop and create some magic? A marquee in front of the theater could even display your names for the night.
Going against the grain with your wedding venue selection can be a bit stressful when negotiating for permissions and filtering the guest lists to be practical, but once you’ve made the choice you’ll be thankful that you infused that special touch of your personality into creating a truly memorable event.
